After supporting Nine Lives Greece from afar for many years, Iris visited Athens this spring to meet some of the hundreds of stray cats helped by the charity every day.
It was in 2011 when I came across the Nine Lives Greece website and bought my first of their marvelous calendars. Many followed in the next years! To my own shame, it took me six years after that to visit Athens and finally meet some the four-pawed models and the unbelievably dedicated volunteers of Nine Lives.
During my visit I had the opportunity not only to meet and feed the more “prominent” cat colonies in downtown Athens and the touristic areas, I could also accompany some of the volunteers who care for the cats in different parts of the city, often in much more challenging circumstances.
Though I was already aware about the work and daily problems Nine Lives volunteers are confronted with, it makes, of course, a big difference to meet them personally and see and talk about the bright but also the unpleasant sides of their commitment. All of them deserve more recognition for their tireless efforts to improve the life of the stray cats, particularly if you keep in mind the difficult economic situation. On top of everything else, they still have to face a lack of understanding in some parts of the society about their work, especially the necessity of neutering/sterilizing the street cats.
So, it was really amazing to see the devotion of all volunteers to “their” cats and to see the strong bond which has developed between them. I hope that they continue to find the strength for their fantastic and incredible work for and with the beautiful and lovely cats of Athens.
Thank you so much for enabling me to be part of the Nines Lives Greece family! Ευχαριστώ πολύ!!
