This spring, pin a cat to your lapel to show you care. Or to your scarf, hat, jumper, T-shirt or bag. Exclusively handcrafted for PawBox by Just Meowing, this unisex wooden brooch can go anywhere and everywhere with you, a stylish and subtle way to rock the feline-inspired fashion trends while also helping street cats in need.PawBox founder/owner Yota Kountouri decided to commission the ’50 Shades of Cat’ pin (the name reflects the way the wood is laser-cut to give it a myriad of different hues, like the coat of a tabby cat) as a special edition to promote feline welfare in Athens.

“Educating and engaging people in order to ameliorate the lives of strays in Greece is one of our main goals with PawBox,” she explains. “Being able to help on a larger scale was something I just needed to do, as a unit I had already reached my limits on how I could help.”

Choosing Nine Lives Greece as the recipient charity for profits from the pin’s sales was the obvious choice for Yota. “I have known Nine Lives Greece since I started my involvement with stray cat care as a foster mom, caretaker, adopter etc,” she says; her first-ever rescue kitty even found a home through our Facebook page. “I admire the discreet way you at Nine Lives Greece do your amazing work. While it is tempting to whine and give up, considering the situation, you always manage to communicate a positive message, which is a quality I haven’t met in any other animal welfare organization.”

Yota’s love for her own beloved rescue cats and dog led her to set up PawBox, a curated monthly gift box scheme. “I was already spending tons of time browsing the internet for the best, most aesthetically pleasing and eco-friendly pet products,” she says. “When I found out about the subscription business model abroad, I saw a gap in the Greek market, along with a growing interest in pet culture, so I went for it!”

At present, PawBox is a one-woman business, though Yota points out that she could not do it without the full support of her life partner and family – nor, indeed, her pets, who test each new product! The Greek brands that are featured in the boxes are also very strong supporters of the concept and, like all the small businesses Yota works with, share PawBox’s environmentally and socially responsible values.
