World Spay Month 2014

For the second year in a row, Nine Lives Greece participated in Humane Society International’s World Spay Month – a global campaign that spotlights the importance of spaying/neutering. Although spay/neuter programs are internationally recognized as the most effective and humane form of stray animal population control, in Greece the idea is still not accepted by everyone, making our job all the more challenging and the occurrence of poisonings still a real threat. That’s why this year, in addition to our World Spay Month Challenge, we worked hard to spread the spay/neuter message to even more animal lovers here in Greece.

We enlisted the help of MTV Greece and Jenny Theona (actress, MTV host and animal lover) to act as the face of the campaign and on February 2nd World Spay Month was launched at Athens’ First Internet Cat Video Festival at Six D.O.G.S. Jenny Theona, a cat lover who herself cares for 10 cats, introduced the upcoming videos and explained how the event was tied to the launch of World Spay Month, while stressing the importance of spaying both our own pets and the enormous stray cat population here in Athens. MTV covered the event and interviewed several Nine Lives volunteers, and the report was aired repeatedly at prime times in the run-up to World Spay Day.

As your donations of support came pouring in, our tireless and dedicated volunteers worked throughout the month in colonies around Athens trapping cats often in difficult conditions, in order to deliver them to  vets to be neutered. With your help, we reached over a hundred cats in colonies around Athens, including Agios Dimitrios, Pangrati, Kifissia, Kaisariani, Neos Kosmos and Hymmetus.  Given that last year was our most successful year yet with almost 1,000 street cats neutered, we set the ambitious target to double the amount of cats spayed and neutered in 2014! Even though World Spay Month has come to an end, our work to control the street cat population of Athens and provide a higher quality of life to our beloved street cats continues.
