BLACKIE
Thanks to
age-old superstitions linking
them to evil-doing and bad
luck, black cats are all too
frequently abandoned and very
rarely offered a chance of a
new home. Were it not for her
colour, we believe that
Blackie would be happily
ensconced on a cosy sofa in a
loving home by now.
She was
abandoned in the park with her
(also black) brother as a very
young kitten in early-summer.
At first, we thought there was
only one kitten, because her
brother would leap down the
tree in which they were hiding
and come over for a quick
stroke before hungrily tucking
into his meal. But then, one
day, one of our feeders spied
Blackie, peeping out from
behind a branch, waiting for
the frightening human to leave
so she could jump down and
have some breakfast. Slowly,
we started to gain her trust.
Then, tragedy
struck. Her brother was killed
by the dogs. Blackie retreated
into a nearby compost heap,
only emerging for a nanosecond
to gobble down some food. We
started trying to tame her
again, each day getting
closer. At long last we
managed a quick stroke, and
from then on, although she was
smart enough to hide all the
rest of the time, when we came
to feed she would rush out,
purring and needling her front
paws in joy, eagerly arching
for strokes as she ate.
Would-be
adopters called, other kittens
were selected and happily
taken home, but no-one was
interested in a black cat.
Finally, we couldn’t bear to
leave her any more, living her
sad little existence in the
compost heap, and we took her
to one of our kind
foster-mums. Now six months
old, spayed, vaccinated,
de-wormed and getting
friendlier by the day, Blackie
will stay there in safety
until the perfect family comes
along and can see beyond the
colour of her coat to the
affectionate, charismatic
character within.
Alkistis:
a 6 month female kitten,
neutered, vaccinated,
de-wormed, fluffy and sweet is
looking for a caring home. One
of her eyes has a white look
but the vet said that she can
see from it. She loves chicken
and it would be ideal if she
were a single pet.

One of
our biggest challenges
is to find responsible,
loving homes for the
stray cats we feed. We
are constantly
struggling to find homes
where they can enjoy the
love, attention, warmth
and companionship they
crave, and – even more
importantly – where they
will be safe from the
stray dogs, speeding
cars and poison that
spell tragedy for
homeless cats. Although
we have been lucky in
rehoming many of the
abandoned kittens we
found this year, it is
extremely difficult to
find homes for the older
cats. This is very
sad
because, although these
cats live outside, they
are by no means wild and
most would adapt very
easily to a new home. We
cherish them all and
provide them with as
much attention and
protection as we can,
but dream of finding
them all the loving
homes they deserve.
Here are
just a few who are still
patiently waiting for
someone to fall in love
with them. |

Sylvestro:
This
2 year old adorable,
sweet,extremely cuddly boy is
looking for this special person
who will offer him a place in
his/her home and in his/her heart.
He is neutered and perfectly
healthy and although he has had a
rough life, this has not affected
the sweetness of his character. He
gets along excellent with other
cats and he loves humans and
children.! |

Leo & Theo:
Found abandoned by a dustbin in
the coastal resort of Ermioni
(northwestern
Peloponnese), these ginger twins
were rescued just in time. Very
friendly, playful, healthy and
toilet-trained, these cuddly boys
are being brought up by a foster
mum - another rescued cat. They
desperately need a home of their
own though, but must go together
as they are inseparable. Please
email us if you are interested in
adopting

Ursula:
Can
you give a home to an old lady for
the last years of her life?
Beautiful
silver-grey Ursula is around ten
years old. She must have come from
a home, as she has impeccable
manners and is very well
house-trained. Perhaps her owner
moved away, or became ill, but for
whatever reason suddenly Ursula
found herself on one of Athens'
main thoroughfares. Thankfully,
she strolled into the antiques
shop of a Nine Lives supporter,
and has been camping out in the
shop ever since. She is an
adorable cat with a great
personality, and even though she
stays in the shop with all the
antiques and little porcelain
items, she never has caused any
damage at all.

However, the shop is closing down,
and Ursula needs a new place to
live. Unfortunately, our supporter
cannot keep her as her other cats
are very jealous and beat up poor
Ursula. An ideal companion for a
single person, Ursula is also good
with other cats, with children and
even with dogs. If you think you
can offer her a home, please email
us soon! |

Puncho
On
the lookout for a home! This
handsome tabby-and-white boy, who
we gave the name Puncho, was
abandoned in central Athens during
the summer exodus, when families
depart for the cooler coastal
resorts, sometimes leaving their
animals behind to fend for
themselves. A very friendly,
cheerful chap, Puncho is around
2-3 years old, is in the peak of
health and just longing for a
family to give him a home again.
